Danny nodded. “We learned about ice, water, and steam last year. But what does that have to do with rock candy?”

Mr. Candor dug through a drawer and found a piece of string. He opened a cupboard and scooped up some sugar. Then he walked over to his tea pot and poured a steaming hot cup of water. “What I’m going to do now boys, is mix this sugar in with the hot water.”

The boys watched as the sugar swirled around the cup and then seemed to disappear. “The sugar is still there, it has just dissolved in the hot water. If we hang this string into the cup and wait until it cools, the sugar will become solid again and harden as crystals.”

Sam peered closer into the cup. “How long will it take? A few more minutes or a few hours?”

Mr. Candor shook his head. “This piece probably won’t form for five or six days. It might take up to a week.”

“Wow!” Danny shouted. “I didn’t know making candy could take so much time.”

“Candy does take time, but not nearly as much time as rock formations. Some rocks form over hundreds or thousands of years,” Mr. Candor said as he carefully moved the cup of hot water away from the counter and into his back room.

Danny turned to Sam. “I’m glad candy doesn’t take hundreds of years to make, or I would never get to taste Mr. Candor’s sweet treats.”
